Text Box: Women Who Use Violence

Women’s use of violence is an interesting field of research that has received surprisingly minimal attention in Social Work publications.  Areas that that we have explored include personality profiles, attitudes toward violence, and substance use.

Project Summary

Topics Included:

· Systematic Review of the Literature

· History of Violence & Trauma Response

· Substance use and abuse

· Treatment Effectiveness

· Provider attitudes about women who use violence

When exploring the links between women and trauma I happened across the body of literature related to women’s use of violence.  Having practiced in the domestic violence field for a number of years, I find the issues revolving around this topic fascinated.

From this interest, the UTA domestic violence diversion program was kind enough to let me explore some of the research questions I found most intriguing from my literature review.

The first project I started looked at trauma reactions finding that none of the women demonstrated PTSD symptoms.  From this finding, I started exploring other aspects of women’s use of relationship violence.

In addition to the population of women who use violence I am also interested in the attitudes human service, law enforcement, and judicial professionals have regarding women offenders.
